Hedgehogs are not a 2 year commitment. They are a 4-6 year commitment, with luck you might get a bit longer.

4-6 years isn’t actually a long time. So to keep your hedgehog for the entirety of its life is a short and sweet endeavor.

If you have your hedgie for 2 years and are bored with it, try getting them some more fun toys. Take them outside! (Weather permitting) Take them places (where they are allowed) and show them off! Set up a night cam to watch their evening activities. Get an odometer for their wheel to see how many miles they run. Try different treats. Set up a small animal playpen with lots of toys to explore! Spice up your relationship with your hedgehog!! 😆 It isn’t your hedgehog’s fault that you didn’t seem to realize that yes, they sleep all day and are active at night. They’re nocturnal. If you did your research, that is one of the key notes about hedgehogs. They sleep all day, they poop a lot, and sometimes they are grumpy. But uh, they are cute, it’s so fun to snuggle with them or watch them run around having a blast!

For some reason, 2 years seems to be the “time to rehome” mark, and I am just not about it. They aren’t a dog or a cat but they do need proper care. That you committed to. They depend on YOU to care for them. Their spikey little lives are in YOUR hands.

I understand times are tough right now, that is the case for most people. And not all situations can be avoided. 😢 But “getting rid” of your hedgehog hurts them probably a lot more than it helps you.

Please keep this in mind this holiday season when purchasing ANY pet. One word: COMMITMENT.
